Action in Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) launched a critical WASH project to provide essential water

sanitation, and hygiene services to drought-affected populations in the Bosaso, Qardho, and Garowe districts of Puntland, Somalia.​UNICEF funded the project. September 2023 to September 2024

The project involved:

  • Raising awareness about hygiene.
  • Constructing and rehabilitating latrines.
  • Desludging them to meet urgent sanitation needs.

ASAL improved water supply systems in healthcare facilities and schools and distributed hygiene kits to 2,200 Bosaso and Qardho IDP community households, including jerry cans, plastic buckets, and soap.

 

Overall, ASAL reached 54,000 individuals in various IDP camps, significantly improving their hygiene practices. In response to a cholera outbreak, 150 emergency latrines were built, and 591 existing ones were rehabilitated. Additionally, 340 individuals, including hygiene promoters and outreach teams, received training further to disseminate knowledge about sanitation and hygiene in the region. This initiative addressed immediate needs and fostered long-term health improvements in these vulnerable communities.
